What differentiates this Job from the Help Me Step It Up Job is that the status quo is OK. People with this Job are not saying, “This isn't me,” or, “Get me out of this role.” Naveena is enjoying her current role. Trisha is in a stable place where she does not need to go back to work at that time. And Karen could retire but she wants to keep going and preserve her legacy.

As a result, the decision to enroll in an educational program is relatively low risk. If you experience this Job, enroll in a program and do not complete, and then you go back to where you were, there is little downside. Little risk means different things in different circumstances, of course.

A friend of ours who had been the CEO of a large, publicly traded company experienced this Job and attended divinity school at a major university to fulfill something he had always wanted. Although for some that would be a big risk because of the commitment in time and money, after having been a CEO, the risk was low for him.

Bob experienced this Job when he attended Stanford's design school (known as the Stanford d.school) to learn more about design thinking and connect it to the Jobs to Be Done theory. It was a full-time program where you were supposed to live on-campus. Bob told Stanford he could not move to Palo Alto from Detroit to attend full-time. Given he did not need the degree – he just wanted the learning – he asked what other options were available. If Stanford had said there were no other options, there would have been little downside to his career. (Bob's negotiation worked, as Stanford ultimately said he could enroll part-time through its executive education program.)

When unearthing this Job, Michael wondered if he had ever experienced it. He ultimately realized that every time he reads a book to learn more about education or cognitive science, he is experiencing this Job. His current living situation with two young daughters and a mortgage to pay have dictated what he must hire: books and podcasts that have a short time horizon and are low cost rather than a full-fledged degree program. The following observations are consistent with this experience:

A line we often heard from people in this Job was what Karen said: Now I have the time to do this. This was true for virtually everyone in this Job. People were emotionally ready to achieve their goals – many of them lifelong ones.

They now had the time, money, and freedom to do so. Naveena's company paid for her to extend herself and created time – and a transition period – for her to do the bootcamp program. Trisha was in a stable place where she finally had the time. Our friend who had left his CEO post had the time to pursue his passion. And when Michael dives into a book, he has the time and budget for that learning experience.
